SHIC Talk Podcast

In this episode of SHIC Talk, host Barb Determan talks to Dr. Miriam Martin LeValley, FFAR’s scientific program manager for Animal Production Systems, and Drs. Megan Niederwerder, Swine Health Information Center (SHIC) executive director, and Lisa Becton, SHIC associate director, about the H5N1 Risk to Swine Research Program FFAR and SHIC funded in 2024 with the Pork Checkoff. The $4 million program supports the prevention, preparedness, mitigation and response capabilities for H5N1 influenza (bird flu) in the U.S. swine herd. H5N1 influenza, an emerging disease identified as a priority for the U.S. pork industry, poses a risk due to ongoing outbreaks in poultry and a growing number of diverse mammalian species susceptible to infection.

About the Swine Health Information Center

The Swine Health Information Center, launched in 2015 with Pork Checkoff funding, protects and enhances the health of the US swine herd by minimizing the impact of emerging disease threats through preparedness, coordinated communications, global disease monitoring, analysis of swine health data, and targeted research investments. As a conduit of information and research, SHIC encourages sharing of its publications and research. Forward, reprint, and quote SHIC material freely.
