Competitive Funding Opportunities

Request for Applications (RFAs)

We issue Request for Applications (RFAs) to solicit ideas from the broadest group of researchers. Some of our programs issue RFAs annually and others are a one-time-only opportunity. We fund the highest quality proposals based on technical merit and impact using a rigorous scientific review process.

Prize Competitions

We host prize competitions to crowdsource pioneering solutions to an imminent problem. Prizes are awarded to individuals or organizations who meet the prize criteria and solve the food and agriculture challenge.

Our investment in research with FFAR aims to foster innovative initiatives to reduce food waste from farm to fork and benefit all stakeholders. Leveraging the strengths of both the public and private sectors helps amplify the impact of the Walmart Foundation’s philanthropic capital. Eileen Hyde

Noncompetitive Funding Opportunities

Direct Funds

When we learn of a specific individual or organization that is well-suited to conduct the necessary research, a research proposal may be directly solicited from that organization. These proposals are subject to the same rigorous scientific review process and matching funding requirement as all other FFAR grant proposals.

Consortia

Research can be financially risky. To reduce the risk, we establish consortia to address common problems recognized across the industry, where solutions are beneficial to all. Consortia participants jointly determine research priorities, pool resources and knowledge and share research results, which also become public.
