In this episode of SHIC Talk, host Barb Determan talks to Dr. Jasmine Bruno, FFAR’s Scientific Program Director for Animal Production Systems, and Dr. Megan Niederwerder, Executive Director of the Swine Health Information Center (SHIC), about the H5N1 Risk to Swine Research Program FFAR and SHIC funded in 2024 with the Pork Checkoff. The $4 million program supports the prevention, preparedness, mitigation and response capabilities for H5N1 influenza (bird flu) in the U.S. swine herd. H5N1 influenza, an emerging disease identified as a priority for the U.S. pork industry, poses a risk due to ongoing outbreaks in poultry and a growing number of diverse mammalian species susceptible to infection.
