WFO-AgMission™ Report: Global Young Farmers’ Consultation on Climate-Smart Agriculture

Rome, Italy

  • Agroecosystems

The World Farmers’ Organisation (WFO) today unveiled the comprehensive ‘Global Youth Producers’ Consultation on Climate-Smart Agriculture’ report, a collaborative effort with the Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research (FFAR) through AgMission™ — a global initiative co-created by WFO and FFAR to unlock agriculture’s potential to address climate change.

During this consultation, young farmers from 34 countries shared their personal stories of success and challenges in climate-smart agriculture (CSA) and provided valuable insights into their local context. The resulting report focuses on the challenges and opportunities young farmers worldwide face in implementing CSA practices.

Drawing on insights from young producers globally, the report identifies four critical areas that must be addressed to accelerate the transition towards CSA:

  • Climate-Smart Agriculture Profitability
  • Soil and Water Management
  • Access to Land and Land Tenure
  • Young Farmers’ Access to Markets and Value Chains

The findings are clear: young farmers face significant barriers that must be overcome to succeed. Among the challenges highlighted:

  • 86% of respondents reported that the lack of digital infrastructure limits their access to new market opportunities.
  • 64% struggle to identify farmer-friendly financial regulations in their country.
  • The transition cost represents a significant challenge for implementing CSA: 93% agreed that financial support, capacity-building training and access to innovative equipment are crucial to address the economic loss sustained during the transition period.

Reflecting on the significance of the report, General Andrea Porro said that this report presents the results of the first-ever comprehensive global consultation with young farmers on Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) practices. It builds on the 2023 Global Farmers’ Consultation, deepening insights from the perspective of those who will shape the future of food systems in the decades ahead. Young farmers are risk takers and keen to bring innovation in how they interpret farming; hence, it is crucial to leverage their vision and insight to promote CSA adoption and ensure the resilience of global food systems.

Developed through the unique Farmers’ Consultation Methodology, a participatory, science-based, and solution-oriented approach conceived by the WFO and funded by AgMission™, the report underscores the importance of collaboration between young producers and researchers. The young farmers’ insights are key to setting priorities for scientific research and developing programmes that support the effective implementation of CSA systems and help achieve our shared goals for the future of agriculture globally.

To effectively address current and emerging food and agriculture challenges, it is imperative that we understand the barriers, limitations and opportunities associated with climate-smart agriculture as shared by the next generation of producers. The Global Youth Producers’ Consultation yielded valuable insights that can help set priorities for scientific research and develop programs that support the implementation of climate-smart agriculture systems to advance our common goals for the future of agriculture.

The release of this report comes at a pivotal moment as discussions at the 2025 World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting in Davos focus on various priorities, including how to unlock the potential of next generation of farmers. This report represents a critical step towards fully realising young farmers’ role as agents of change in achieving agriculture’s potential to yield nutritious food grown on thriving farms and lessen environmental impact.
