Wheat stem sawflies are non-stinging wasp-like insects that cause wheat yield losses across the U.S. Sawflies previously targeted spring wheat crops; however, these pests have recently emerged in Kansas, Colorado and Nebraska, suggesting that it is evolving to feed on winter wheat crops as well. Led by Dr. Punya Nachappa, Colorado State University researchers are identifying resistance genes in wheat and developing predictive models that determine the likelihood of wheat stem sawfly infestation.
Grant OutcomeThis project developed the first robust phenology model for wheat stem sawfly in the Central Great Plains, enabling growers to predict pest emergence, peak activity and decline using growing degree-days to improve monitoring and management decisions. The research also identified novel wheat stem sawfly-resistant traits in commercially available wheat varieties, providing breeders and producers with new tools to reduce crop losses. Together, these advances strengthen the ability of farmers across Colorado, Nebraska and Kansas to manage this emerging pest and improve the resilience of regional wheat production systems.
